Gautam Gambhir, only applicant for job of India men’s cricket coach

Former Indian Test batsman Gautam Gambhir, the sole applicant for the position of head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, is scheduled to undergo an interview with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) via Zoom on Tuesday. The tenure of current coach Rahul Dravid concludes after the ongoing T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited applications for the role in mid-May, with the deadline set for May 27, a day after the IPL final.

Gambhir, who also serves as a mentor for the current IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders, will be interviewed by a CAC panel comprising former cricketers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik.

Additionally, the CAC will conduct interviews to appoint a new selector, tasked with replacing Salil Ankola. Given that both Ankola and chief selector Ajit Agarkar hail from the West Zone, the new selector is expected to be chosen from the North Zone, a position currently vacant. Agarkar assumed his role in July last year, succeeding Chetan Sharma, who stepped down following a controversial incident. Ankola had been serving as a selector when Agarkar assumed office.
