A new controversy has arisen ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy set to be held in Pakistan and Dubai, as India has reportedly objected to including ‘Pakistan’ (the host nation’s name) on their team jersey. Although India will play their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai, Pakistan remains the official host of the tournament. Despite the Pakistans Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council agreeing to a hybrid model following the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s decision not to send its team to Pakistan, the mention of the host name on the jersey has sparked fresh tensions.
India’s Objection to ‘Pakistan’ on Jerseys Sparks Pre-Champions Trophy Dispute
A PCB official, speaking anonymously to news agency IANS, accused the BCCI of “bringing politics into cricket” by refusing to allow Pakistan’s name to appear on Team India’s jerseys. The official also pointed out that the Indian board had reportedly declined to send captain Rohit Sharma to Pakistan for the captains’ meet, an inaugural event for the Champions Trophy.
“The BCCI is politicizing cricket, which is harmful to the sport. They refused to visit Pakistan, declined to send their captain for the opening ceremony, and now reports suggest they don’t want the host nation’s (Pakistan) name on their jerseys. We trust that the ICC, as the world governing body, will step in and support Pakistan,” the PCB official said.

The BCCI has remained firm in its decision not to send Team India to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, despite significant efforts by the PCB to change its stance. Ultimately, the Pakistan Cricket Board had to concede to India’s demands, a compromise that could also impact Pakistan’s participation in future ICC events held in India.
As the tournament approaches, the tension between the two boards shows no signs of easing. India’s refusal to have Pakistan’s name printed on their jerseys has added fuel to the fire, with the PCB accusing the BCCI of mixing politics with cricket. The dispute over the host nation’s name has drawn widespread attention and criticism.
With the Champions Trophy just about a month away, these ongoing controversies continue to dominate headlines, overshadowing preparations for the tournament. The strained relations between the two cricketing boards highlight the challenges of hosting a major event amidst political and logistical disagreements.
