Congress leader Shama Mohamed, who previously criticized India captain Rohit Sharma for his fitness, has now come out in support of pacer Mohammed Shami after he chose not to observe ‘Roza’ (fast) during the Champions Trophy. The 34-year-old cricketer was seen consuming an energy drink during the semi-final match against Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, which led to a controversy. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of All India Muslim Jamaat, criticized Shami, calling him “a criminal” for not fasting during Ramzan.
Shama Mohamed Backs Shami Amid ‘Roza’ Controversy
Defending Shami, Shama Mohamed emphasized that Islam provides flexibility regarding fasting during travel. She explained that fasting is not mandatory while traveling. She also highlighted that cricket is a physically demanding sport where staying hydrated is crucial for performance.
“It is your deeds that truly matter. “Islam is a scientific religion, and no one insists that athletes must fast while competing,” Shama told ANI. She emphasized that religious practices should be followed with understanding and practicality.
Speaking to ANI, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi strongly criticized Mohammed Shami for not observing ‘Roza’ during the Champions Trophy. He called it a violation of Islamic law and stated that by skipping the fast, Shami had committed a crime in the eyes of Shariat. He further claimed that Shami would have to answer to God for his actions.

Maulana Bareilvi emphasized that fasting during Ramzan is a fundamental religious duty. He stated that any healthy man or woman who does not observe ‘Roza’ is considered a sinner under Islamic teachings.
Referring to Shami consuming a drink during the match, he pointed out that as a professional athlete, Shami was visibly fit to play. In such a situation, choosing not to fast while publicly drinking water or another beverage was, according to him, unacceptable.
He further argued that Shami’s actions set a wrong example for others, as millions were watching him. He believed that influential figures should uphold religious obligations, reinforcing the importance of fasting during Ramzan.
