Team India’s hopes of winning the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai have taken a hit, as reports indicate it would take a ‘miracle’ for Jasprit Bumrah to achieve full fitness ahead of the global tournament. Bumrah has been battling a back injury since the final Test against Australia in Sydney. Bumrah has been consulting Dr. Rowan Schouten in New Zealand for his recovery. He also plans to visit the country for further treatment before the Champions Trophy. With his fitness unlikely to improve in time, the BCCI is preparing a ‘backup’ plan.
Bumrah’s Fitness Woes Force BCCI to Prepare Backup for Champions Trophy
The selectors are preparing Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj as potential backups. This is in case Jasprit Bumrah cannot recover in time for the Champions Trophy, as reported by the Times of India.
“The BCCI medical team is in contact with Dr. Rowan Schouten in New Zealand. Although plans were made for Bumrah to visit New Zealand for treatment, it hasn’t materialized yet. The selectors understand that Bumrah achieving full fitness within the given timeline would be nothing short of a miracle,” a BCCI official told TOI.
Harshit, who is part of India’s ODI squad for the England series, might also be considered for the Champions Trophy squad if Bumrah’s recovery remains uncertain. Dr. Schouten had previously operated on Bumrah following an injury that forced him to miss the 2022 T20 World Cup.

The report states that Bumrah’s medical team will share his reports with his doctor in New Zealand. The decision to send him there will depend on the feedback received. “The board and Bumrah are cautious about not rushing his recovery, given his long-term importance,” a source stated.
The selectors will be informed of Bumrah’s readiness only after his recovery process is fully completed. A backup plan must be ready, as it would take a miracle for Bumrah to return in time,” the source added.
Bumrah has been advised to avoid intense physical activity. This makes his chances of being fit for the Champions Trophy slim. The BCCI can revise India’s squad for the tournament until February 11.
