    Mansukh L Mandaviya speaks

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated in the Lok Sabha that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has lodged a strong protest with United World Wrestling (UWW) against Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics due to being overweight. Mandaviya revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed IOA President PT Usha to take appropriate action.

“Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics for being overweight by 100 grams. Competing in the 50-kg category, her weight was recorded at 50 kg and 100 grams, leading to her disqualification,” Mandaviya explained.

He emphasized that the government had provided Phogat with extensive support, including financial assistance and personal staff. Despite these provisions, Phogat’s disqualification has caused significant controversy, with opposition leaders calling for an investigation into the incident.

Mandaviya mentioned that IOA President PT Usha is currently in Paris and has been in communication with PM Modi to address the situation. The opposition INDIA bloc demanded further clarification and staged a walkout when their request was not met.

Phogat’s disqualification has sparked outrage in India. Previously, she made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category. She was guaranteed at least a silver medal but will now return empty-handed.

Congress MP Selja criticized the team management, questioning why Phogat’s weight gain went unnoticed despite close monitoring of athletes’ diets. Selja called for accountability from the managers responsible for overseeing the athletes.

Congress MP Deepender Hooda urged a review of the decision leading to Phogat’s disqualification. He expressed the nation’s disappointment, acknowledging Phogat’s hard work and dedication, both during her protest for justice and in her Olympic journey. Despite the setback, Hooda affirmed that Vinesh Phogat remains a champion in the eyes of the nation.
