India’s Champions Trophy squad has been announced for some time, but recent performances in the T20I series against England have sparked discussions about possible changes. Despite selecting four spinners for the ICC event, veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has advocated for Varun Chakravarthy’s inclusion. Chakravarthy impressed with the ball against England, claiming 14 wickets in five matches and earning the Player of the Series title. Although he has yet to make his ODI debut for India, he is expected to feature in the upcoming 50-over series against England.
Ashwin Backs Varun Chakravarthy for Champions Trophy Spot
If Varun Chakravarthy delivers a strong performance in the 50-over format as well, Ravichandran Ashwin believes the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee might consider adjusting the Champions Trophy squad to accommodate the mystery spinner.
“Everyone is discussing whether he should have been in the Champions Trophy squad, but I believe he still has a chance. Since teams have announced only provisional squads, he might get selected,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
India’s announced squad remains ‘provisional,’ with changes allowed until February 11. While Varun Chakravarthy has a chance to push for his inclusion, Ashwin questions which player he would replace if selected. Any alteration would present a tough decision for skipper Rohit Sharma and the selection committee.

“If a seamer is dropped to accommodate Varun, it would mean adding a fifth spinner to the squad. I’m not sure who they would leave out if they consider bringing him in. We’ll have to wait and see,” Ashwin remarked.
He also expressed doubts about Chakravarthy being directly included in the Champions Trophy squad without ODI experience.
“I have a feeling Varun might get a chance to play in the India vs. England ODI series. It’s not an easy decision to take him straight to the Champions Trophy without any ODI matches under his belt. They will likely test him in this series first,” Ashwin explained.
“If he doesn’t get an opportunity here, it will be tough for him. Nevertheless, I congratulate Varun on winning his first Player of the Tournament award. Right now, he is the Chakravarthy of T20I cricket, and I hope he continues to grow,” he concluded.
