Abhishek Sharma delivered a spectacular knock of 135 off 54 balls in the fifth and final T20I against England, emerging as the series’ leading run-scorer by a significant margin. In doing so, he surpassed India’s ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill’s record for the highest individual T20I score by an Indian. With Abhishek in top form and Yashasvi Jaiswal excelling in Test cricket, India’s opening spots in limited-overs formats have become highly competitive. Despite the challenge, the 25-year-old Gill emphasized that there is no “toxic competition” among them.

Abhishek’s Record-Breaking Knock and India’s Intensifying Opening Battle

“Abhishek has been my childhood friend, and Jaiswal is also a good friend. I don’t believe there is any toxic competition between us. When you play for the country, your focus is on performing in every match, not hoping that someone else fails,” Gill stated.

“You are representing the nation and the team, so whoever performs deserves appreciation,” he added.

Given his experience and past performances, Gill is likely to open alongside Rohit Sharma in the Champions Trophy 2025.

The focus remains on senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as both have faced challenges with the bat in recent times.

However, Shubman Gill was quick to defend Rohit, emphasizing the captain’s outstanding performances in white-ball cricket. He highlighted Rohit’s crucial contributions that helped India reach the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Additionally, Rohit showcased his form in the recent Sri Lanka series, where he registered two half-centuries.

Gill praised Rohit’s impact in ODIs over the past year and a half, describing it as game-changing for the team. “The way Rohit bhai has been batting in ODIs has been transformative. His ability to set the momentum from the very first ball puts the opposition on the back foot and makes things easier for the non-striker and the incoming batsmen. This aggressive approach has significantly benefited our team,” Gill explained.
