During India’s clash against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025 on Sunday, February 23, Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s world record in ODI cricket. The Indian batting legend also became the third player globally to surpass 14,000 runs in ODI cricket.

Kohli surpassed Sachin’s record by becoming the fastest player globally to score 14,000 runs in ODI cricket. Needing just 15 runs before the clash against Pakistan, he quickly achieved the milestone in the second innings. The former Indian captain is now the third player in history to reach 14,000 runs in the 50-over format, joining legends Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.

    Fastest to 14000 ODI runs:

    1 – Virat Kohli: 287 innings

    2 – Sachin Tendulkar: 350 innings

    3 – Kumar Sangakkara: 478 innings

Ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, Kohli needed just 37 runs to reach the milestone but fell short in India’s opening match against Bangladesh, getting dismissed for 22. In their clash against Pakistan, the opposition set a modest target of 241 on a sluggish pitch after opting to bat first, with Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan building a solid 104-run partnership for the third wicket. Despite this foundation, Pakistan likely felt they were 20-25 runs short at the midway mark. India’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout, with Kuldeep Yadav taking three wickets, Hardik Pandya claiming two, and Harshit Rana, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja contributing with one wicket each.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. At the toss, Rizwan stated, “We will bat first as the pitch looks good. Our aim is to set a solid target. Every match in ICC events is crucial, so we’ll stick to our usual approach. The team is comfortable with these conditions, we’ve performed well here before, and we aim to give our best today. Although we lost the previous game, that’s behind us now. We’ve made one change—Fakhar is out, and Imam comes in.”

Rohit, responding at the toss, said, “It doesn’t matter much; since they won the toss, we’ll bowl first. The pitch seems similar to the last game, a bit on the slower side. Our batting lineup is experienced, so we’re prepared for slower pitches. We need a balanced team effort with both bat and ball. The last match was tough, which is good because it helps us handle pressure and challenge ourselves. We’re going with the same playing XI.”
