Vignesh Puthur had a remarkable debut for Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 opener against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The left-arm wrist-spinner troubled CSK’s batters, keeping Mumbai in contention while defending 155.
He played a key role in MI’s fightback, dismissing CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (53), Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda. Puthur removed Gaikwad with a catch down the ground, deceived Dube into a long-on dismissal, and took Hooda’s wicket at deep mid-wicket, securing three crucial breakthroughs.

Who is MI spinner Puthur?
Vignesh Puthur, a 24-year-old left-arm wrist-spinner from Kerala, was acquired by Mumbai Indians for Rs 30 lakh in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Although he hasn’t featured in his state’s senior team, he has represented Kerala at the U14 and U19 levels. MI scouted him after his standout performances for Alleppey Ripples in the Kerala Cricket League, where he took two wickets in three matches.
Puthur gained experience in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and initially bowled both medium pace and spin. Local cricketer Mohammed Sherif encouraged him to focus on leg spin, leading him to shift his base to Thrissur for better opportunities. He played for Jolly Rovers Cricket Club, which helped him secure a spot in the KCL and eventually earn an IPL contract.
Vignesh made his IPL debut as CSK hosted MI in the 2025 season opener. CSK chose to bowl first, with captain Gaikwad highlighting their intent to adapt to the unfamiliar pitch. MI’s stand-in skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, was comfortable batting first, emphasizing the prestige of both franchises and anticipating a thrilling match.
