IPL Enforces Strict Rules for Overseas Players to Curb Auction Misconduct
A new rule, set to take effect from the IPL 2026 mini-auction, states that no overseas player can earn more than the highest-paid retained or sold player from the last mega auction, whichever amount is lower. This regulation has sparked significant debate among fans and experts. Many are questioning the fairness of limiting foreign players’ earnings in mini-auctions.
However, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal backed the decision, stating that the aim is to encourage more overseas players to participate in the mega auctions. He clarified that if a player is bought for over Rs 18 crore, they will only receive Rs 18 crore, and the extra amount will go to the BCCI for player welfare. Dhumal emphasized that having more players available for the mega auction allows franchises to plan their teams for the next three years. He shared these insights in an interview with the Indian Express.

Dhumal also discussed the potential 2-year ban for overseas players who withdraw from the IPL after being sold in the mega auction. He stated, “We’ve noticed that some players skip the bigger auctions and choose to participate in smaller ones to secure a higher value.”
“We want to protect those who commit to the mega auction. If a player is picked but later becomes unavailable, they must provide valid reasons. It’s not acceptable for someone to participate in the auction, get selected, and then refuse to play. Franchise owners and teams invest significant effort in building the best squad, and every player has an important role. If a player withdraws, it jeopardizes the team,” Dhumal elaborated.
“It’s a team sport, and players need to show 100% commitment. If they declare their availability, they must follow through unless there’s a legitimate medical reason. Supported by a written statement from their home board,” he emphasized.
