Criticism arose due to the outcomes produced by the tool, leading to questions about whether Google was excessively addressing the potential risk of racial bias in its AI model. Following the backlash, the tech giant has temporarily halted its Gemini Artificial Intelligence chatbot from generating images of people. The move follows an apology issued by Google a day after the release of the revamped Gemini on February 8, acknowledging “inaccuracies” in the historical depictions created by the chatbot.
Users posted screenshots on social media earlier this week, revealing instances where the chatbot inaccurately portrayed racially diverse characters in white-dominated scenes. One instance includes the Gemini AI chatbot representing Nazi-era troops as individuals from various ethnic backgrounds. The outcomes produced by the tool sparked criticism and raised inquiries about whether Google was excessively compensating for the potential racial bias in its AI model.

What did Google say about the controversy
Shortly after the controversy, Google issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We are actively addressing recent concerns regarding the image generation feature of Gemini. During this process, we are temporarily suspending the generation of images of people and plan to release an enhanced version soon.” Earlier on Thursday, Google acknowledged that the Gemini chatbot was providing inaccurate historical image depictions.
The statement mentioned, “We are actively working to rectify these inaccuracies in historical depictions. While Gemini’s AI image generation includes a diverse range of people, which is generally positive for global users, we recognize that it has fallen short in accuracy.”
