On March 21, Monumental Labs posted a video of an AI-powered robot using advanced technology to carve a Renaissance-style marble sculpture. The video quickly went viral, sparking backlash from the internet, with art enthusiasts condemning it as the destruction of the art community and artistic expression.

Internet Outrage Over AI-Generated Art
The internet reacted with outrage in the comments. One user sarcastically remarked on AI’s ability to “create art,” questioning whether a machine could ever grasp Michelangelo’s vision or Van Gogh’s dreams. Another scoffed, “Then I should be able to buy it for ten bucks.” Others criticized AI’s focus on creative fields, arguing it should be solving real-world problems instead. One comment summed up the concern: “The value is in the soul. The moment a machine achieves it, we are doomed.”
After the immense criticism from the internet, Monumental Labs posted a video of two sculptors working on the marble statue with a sarcastic caption. “’This RoBot is NOT Michelangelo!’ No Kidding! On this statue of St. Joseph, the robot simply roughed out the basic shape. Now, our carvers will spend months using traditional carving tools to realize the final form. Our fabrication methods lower costs significantly, expanding the market for sculpture and creating new opportunities for skilled craftsmen,” they wrote.
