Tuesday brought the first snowfall of the season to Uttarkashi, the Himalayan shrine of Gangotri, and other locations while “cool day” temperatures prevailed in Delhi (January 3, 2023). With the India Metrological Department (IMD) forecasting that cold wave conditions are very likely to persist over northwest India during the next three days, the maximum temperature in the nation’s capital dropped five notches below normal at many locations, including Lodhi Road, Palam, Jafarpur, and Mayur Vihar. At Delhi’s main weather station, the Safdarjung observatory, the minimum temperature was 8.5 degrees Celsius, which is a little higher than average, and the maximum temperature was 16.1 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees more than average.
Cold wave conditions are to returning to Delhi on weekend
For the next two days, Delhi is expected to have “moderate” to “dense” fog, according to the IMD. The weekend is also expected to bring back cold wave conditions, with temperatures possibly falling as low as 4 degrees Celsius.
According to the MeT department, cold wave conditions are also projected to last over northwest India for the next three days. However, some relief is anticipated after that.
Uttarkashi receives the season’s first snowfall
The Gangotri temple in the Himalayas, among other locations in Uttarkashi, saw its first snowfall of the year on Tuesday night.
According to District Disaster Management Officer Devendra Patwal, snow also fell at Gomukh, the location of Ganga’s origin, Harshil, the Nelang Valley, Dharali, Mukhba, Upla Taknaur, and the well-known tourist destination Kyarkoti. Low-lying areas were swept by icy cold winds, he claimed.
