On Monday afternoon, a second landslide struck the temple town of Tiruvannamalai, following a deadly incident the day before. Heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Fengal caused a boulder to crash onto a residential building on Annamalaiyar Hill on Sunday at 4:30 PM, killing a family of seven.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue operations, assisted by experts from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, are ongoing but face significant challenges due to relentless rainfall and the danger posed by another precariously balanced boulder.
The heavy rains continued on Monday, with Viluppuram district in northern Tamil Nadu experiencing unprecedented floods. Bridges were washed out, access to villages and residential colonies was cut off, and acres of crops were destroyed. Rail traffic was also severely affected.
Record Rainfall in Western Tamil Nadu
Western districts, including Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, recorded significant rainfall. Uthangarai in Krishnagiri received 50 cm in 24 hours, Viluppuram recorded 42 cm, Harur in Dharmapuri 33 cm, and Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai 16 cm.
Videos from Uthangarai showed vehicles, including buses, being swept away by floodwaters after 14 continuous hours of rain.
According to the Weather Department, the heavy rainfall is due to the remnants of Cyclone Fengal, now a strong low-pressure area over northern Tamil Nadu. Alerts have also been issued for northern Kerala and southern Karnataka as the system is expected to intensify over the Arabian Sea by December 3.
Flooded Chennai Airport
Over the weekend, parts of Chennai airport were submerged, leading to multiple flight cancellations and affecting hundreds of passengers. Operations were suspended until 4 AM on Sunday. At least two deaths have been reported so far. Among them was a migrant worker in Chennai who was electrocuted while attempting to withdraw cash from an ATM. Rainfall alerts have been extended to northern Kerala and southern Karnataka as the remnants of Cyclone Fengal continue to impact the region.
